How do I create a railing?

On my second floor I want to place a railing along the open to below area. The bannister doesn’t help as it becomes a closed wall in 3D. Using a fence also doesn’t help as they are not 3D. I have been using a balcony with the smallest width possible, which looks OK, but still feels weird.

I’ve been looking for a railing solution as well.
Any news on a railing, banister, balcony solution?
I am trying to model a room that has an eight foot overlook to a room below; its got a railing at this spot. It also has stairs with a railing to prevent someone from falling down those.
Right now I’ve got walls in place, but would like something else.
Any thoughts?
